Excitation of instabilies in a Blasius boundary layer by surface vibration

چکیده

Here we have demonstrated that small amplitude vibration can artificially excite both two dimensional (2D) and three (3D) instability modes. The 2D modes were typical of Tollmien–Schlichting (TS) waves provided the frequency excitation lies within unstable region neutral stability predicted by modal linear theory. Instability of streaky structure in a Blasius boundary layer

An experimental study was performed to analyze the stability of localized streaky structure in a Blasius boundary layer. An artificial streaky structure was created by using suction or blowing through a thin spanwise slot at the wall. The velocity gradient generated by the suction or blowing was controlled by a damper. The Reynolds number based on the displacement thickness d1 was Red1 =280 at ...

Algebraic growth in a Blasius boundary layer: Nonlinear optimal disturbances

The three-dimensional, algebraically growing instability of a Blasius boundary layer is studied in the nonlinear regime, employing a nonparallel model based on boundary layer scalings. Adjoint-based optimization is used to determine the “optimal” steady leading-edge excitation that provides the maximum energy growth for a given initial energy. Like in the linear case, the largest transient grow...

Numerical studies of bypass transition in the Blasius boundary layer

Experimental findings show that transition from laminar to turbulent flow may occur also if the exponentially growing perturbations, eigensolutions to the linearised disturbance equations, are damped. An alternative non-modal growth mechanism has been recently identified, also based on the linear approximation. This consists of the transient growth of streamwise elongated disturbances, with reg...

Far Downstream Analysis for the Blasius Boundary-layer Stability Problem

In this paper we examine the large Reynolds number, Re, asymptotic structure of the wavenumber in the Orr-Sommerfeld region, for the Blasius boundary-layer on a semi-infinite flat plate given by Goldstein (1). We show that the inclusion of the term which contains the leading order non-parallel effects, at O(Re−1/2), leads to a non-uniform expansion. By considering the far downstream form of eac...

Blasius Boundary Layer Solution With Slip Flow Conditions

As the number of applications of micro electro mechanical systems, or MEMS, increase, the variety of flow geometries that must be analyzed at the micro-scale is also increasing. To date, most of the work on MEMS scale fluid mechanics has focused on internal flow geometries, such as microchannels. As applications such as micro-scale flyers are considered, it is becoming necessary to consider ext...
